Limestone retaining walls in the Perth Hills

Updated October 2026

Limestone is the stone wall Perth actually builds. Reconstituted limestone block is a standard WA product, made and sold here, and it is what most Perth garden, feature and boundary stone walls are built from. Midland Brick, whose works sit at South Guildford just down the hill, lists metre blocks engineered from reconstituted limestone and a limestone range in its block catalogue. Main Roads WA even has a standard specification for limestone retaining walls. We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who build limestone walls across the Perth Hills.

The limestone options

Reconstituted limestone block is the common choice: cast blocks in consistent sizes, laid in courses, available in a range of colours and textures. It is predictable to build with, which means it is predictable to price, and it suits terracing, garden walls, planter beds and street frontages. Expect some colour and texture variation between batches, which suppliers say openly and which most people consider part of the look.

Large format blocks, sometimes sold as metre blocks, are the heavy end of the same idea: big units placed by machine, used for bigger batters, driveway cuttings and civil work. They need machine access, which on a steep Hills block is the first thing to check.

Natural quarried limestone is the premium version, cut from the stone rather than cast. It costs more and looks like what it is.

How limestone behaves, honestly

Limestone is heavy, and mass is most of what a gravity wall needs. A well built limestone wall resists soil load by weight, and courses laid with open or raked joints let some water escape rather than building up behind the face.

The honest caveat: limestone is a soft stone and it weathers. Perth limestone walls commonly pit and spall at the surface over decades, more so where they stay damp or get sprinkler overspray. It is cosmetic for a long time before it is structural, but it is worth knowing before you choose it for a wall that will be looked at every day. Keep reticulation off the face and the wall will age a lot more slowly.

A second caveat specific to up here. The Hills substrate is laterite and ironstone gravel over granite, not sand, so a limestone wall still wants engineered footings and proper drainage behind it. Open joints are not a drainage system. The builders we refer back serious walls with ag-pipe and free draining gravel regardless of material, because controlled drainage beats hopeful drainage. Our retaining wall drainage page covers why.

Guide pricing

As a rough 2026 guide, stone retaining walls typically run around $350 to $700 per metre for a wall about a metre high, and some Perth cost guides put reconstituted limestone block at $480 to $780 per square metre of wall face, with natural quarried stone above that. Guide pricing only. Block size, access for machinery, and whether the wall is engineered move the number substantially. The retaining wall cost guide covers the price drivers in detail, including how rock changes a Hills quote.

Approvals, engineering and registration

In WA a retaining wall is exempt from needing a building permit only where it retains no more than 500mm of ground, is not tied to other building work or to holding up the land next door, and is not work of a kind that affects adjoining land. The measurement is the ground retained, not the wall height, and all three conditions have to be met, so a boundary wall needs a permit at any height. Development approval under the local planning scheme can be a separate question. Walls carrying a surcharge such as a driveway, a pool or a building generally need engineering whatever their height. Confirm your wall with the Shire of Mundaring, the City of Kalamunda, the City of Swan or the City of Armadale, whichever is your permit authority, and have your builder lodge a free Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) enquiry before anything is dug.

Who is allowed to build it is a statutory question in WA, and it turns on how the work is classified under the building legislation rather than on a figure a homeowner can look up and apply to their own job. We are not going to settle that on a web page. Ask the builder what registration or licence they hold, check it with Building and Energy, and ask your permit authority what your particular wall requires before you sign anything.

How the referral works

Perth Hills Retaining Walls is a referral service, not a stonemason. Tell us about your job through the form and we pass it to an experienced, insured local builder who works your suburb and knows limestone. They call you back with a free quote and you deal with them directly from there. Weighing up alternatives? Compare block retaining walls and concrete sleeper walls first.

Frequently asked questions

Is limestone or concrete sleeper stronger?

Different kinds of strong. A limestone wall is a gravity wall that holds by mass, while a sleeper wall holds through engineered steel posts. At garden height either works. Above about a metre the engineer's design decides the question, not the material.

Why do Perth limestone walls go crumbly at the surface?

Limestone is a soft sedimentary stone, so the face weathers, pits and sheds a little over the years. Constant damp accelerates it, which is why keeping reticulation and sprinkler overspray off a limestone wall is the single best thing you can do for it. Surface pitting is usually cosmetic long before it is structural, but have a wall assessed if blocks are losing shape or courses are moving.

Does a limestone wall need machine access?

Large format blocks do, since individual units can weigh hundreds of kilos. Standard reconstituted blocks can be laid by hand on a tight site, at a slower pace and a higher labour cost. Access is one of the first things a builder checks on a Hills quote visit.

Can limestone be used for a structural wall, not just a garden one?

Yes, with engineering. Reconstituted limestone block is used in civil and commercial retaining work as well as residential, and Main Roads WA publishes a specification for limestone retaining walls. For anything carrying load on your block, the engineer's design is what settles the detail.
